Audio on SoundCloud: The Nalikae Tree Lullaby

Traditional lullaby from Southern Thailand, and the basis for "Ten Thousand Bridges" (www.artaksha.com). Singer and year of recording unknown.

"Dear little child, listen to me: There was once a Nalikae coconut tree,
Alone it stood amidst the wax sea,
Neither by the rain was it shaken, nor by thunder.
It can only be reached by those
Who go beyond merit and matter."
(Origin unknown. Recording c/o the Buddhadasa Indapanno Archives.)

"The Nalikae Tree" a video projection for meditation

The "Ten Thousand Bridges" (2013) installation included a video projection within the meditation space of the Buddhadasa Indapanno Archive. The projection features footage of the installation at night and recordings of the ma'prau nalikae lullaby recorded in Southern Thailand (singer unknown).

It was a unique challenge to create a projection for a meditation space. It needed to be subtle, so as not to disturb occupants. Furthermore, the projection surface is round and in circular room with 6 speakers. This video was played in a loop throughout the 6-week exhibition.
